Cathedraltown

Cathedraltown is a planned 225 acre unincorporated town in Markham that began development in 2004. The community has an estimated population of 3,000 and is located just north-west of the former village of Unionville. Cathedraltown was named after the Cathedral of Transfiguration, around which the town was built. The Cathedral was built in 1984 and is the centrepiece of the community. The Cathedral’s centre tower, rises 210 feet. It also contains one of the world’s largest peal of three bells, weighing 32,000 pounds which ring several times a day.

The town began settlement in 2006 with the completion of homes north of the Cathedral. Since then, various housing options such as townhouses, semi-detached and fully detached homes, as well as low-rise condominium apartments have been built to the west and south of the Cathedral. Dwellings are built close together, for higher densities than traditional suburban tract housing. Like other “new urbanist” developments, the garages and service areas are found in back alleys. Parkettes and playgrounds face the street, rather than behind houses. The community also boasts a main street lined with storefronts and has easy access to Highway 404.
